Anemometer Loan Program

I applied for an anemometer loan through the GEO/ALP program for the Town of Nederland.  Long shot for this year, but maybe next... I suggested the wastewater site, as it's unobstructed and owned by the Town.  It sits low in the valley, so it may not be the best site.  The ALP has data from Estes Park and Blackhawk.  Both were classified as "marginal" sites, but I didn't find many sites in CO that weren't listed as "marginal."  Perhaps we'd have a better location.

In doing more wind research, a few notes:

  • $1 of conservation equals $3 in wind (from Homepower); do conservation before even thinking about wind (or solar for that matter)!
  • Mariahpower.com is the only VAWT that is being tested by NREL, and it's a Darreius; the helix, Savonius type are very inefficient; be skeptical of their claims even in high wind (which they may not be able to withstand anyway)
  • Still unanswered: How turbulent is our wind in Ned?  Would the site at the wastewater plant work well?  How high is too high?
